Federico Campagna: The History of World-Building Imagination
29. 8. 2023 from 6 pm
Hope Recycling Station in cooperation with the Centre for Contemporary Art Prague cordially invite you to a lecture by Federico Campagna, an Italian philosopher and writer based in London.
His lecture, as well as his latest work and the book Campagna is currently writing, concerns the history of world-building imagination in the Mediterranean context, with particular reference to how it was used in moments of great historical crisis. He looks at the melting and shifting of identities, and at the practice of "migrating outside the world", whenever history makes the old world uninhabitable. Though this angle, he will tacle questions of sustainability of life and society in general, democracy, technology and video games.
Federico Campagna is a lecturer in Intellectual History at ECAL in Lausanne, Associate Fellow at the Warburg Institute in London and Critical Fellow at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He works as rights director at the UK/US radical publisher Verso, and as senior editor at the Italian philosophy publisher Timeo, which he co-founded.
He spent over twenty years in Milan, where he was active in the anarchist/autonomist networks and co-founded the street-poetry collective Eveline. In 2007 he moved to London, where he lives. In 2009 he started a long-term collaboration with the Italian Autonomia philosopher Franco Berardi 'Bifo'. In that same year, he co-founded the (now defunct) multilingual platform for critical theory Through Europe.
He has a PhD from the Royal College of Art, London, with a thesis on Metaphysics and Metaethics in the Design of Strategy Video Games (available here), an MSc and a BSc in Economics and Management of the Arts from Bocconi University, Milan, and an MA in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths University, London.
He is the host of the podcast Overmorrow's Library, produced by the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève. He was the philosopher in residence at Castello di Rivoli Contemporary Art Museum (Turin) for the year 2022. He was Frances A Yates Fellow at the Warburg Institute in London in 2022. He was the winner of the Premio Nazionale Frascati Filosofia Elio Matassi XIII Edizione, categoria esordiente, 2022.
His latest books are Prophetic Culture: recreation for adolescents (Bloomsbury: 2021), Technic and Magic: the reconstruction of reality (Bloomsbury, 2018), and The Last Night (Zero Books, 2013).
