Franz Thalmair: From Collaboration to Contamination • SUMO
2. 9. 2022 from 5 pm
We cordially invite you to the lecture given by Franz Thalmair From Collaboration to Contamination, which takes place as part of an international gallery co-op SUMO 2022.
“How does a gathering become a ‘happening,’ that is, greater than a sum of its parts? One answer is contamination. We are contaminated by our encounters; they change who we are as we make way for others. As contamination changes world-making projects, mutual worlds—and new directions—may emerge. Everyone carries a history of contamination; purity is not an option.”
(Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing)
Hybridization and amalgamation, linkages, entanglements, bastards, liaisons, aggregators, portemanteaus, mycelia, rhizomes and network-like assemblages: The lecture given by Franz Thalmair (mumok – Museum moderner Kunst) called From Collaboration to Contamination explores artistic phenomena that relate different, sometimes contradictory entities within contemporary visual culture. It spans a thematic arc from the basic ideas of “collaboration” as a form of relationship between at least two different entities to “contamination”, a concept that seems more relevant than ever in times of global crises and toxicity permeating all areas of life. The lecture positions different forms of getting-in-touch and being-in-relationship-with-each-other against imperatives of autonomy, originality and authenticity, against binary forms of knowledge and essentialisms, indeed against an idea of purity that has been forced in Western modernity and recently again propagated on the global stages of politics and economy.
